Development of the M198 Medium Towed Howitzer 155mm towed howitzer began in 1968, when a lightweight replacement for the World War II 155mm M114 howitzer was sought. A prototype testbed was designed and built at the Rock Island Army Arsenal in 1969, and firing tests began in 1970. After initial firing tests, two prototype M198 howitzers were delivered to the army in 1972, and after additional testing, the M198 howitzer entered full-time employment. production in 1978. The first M198 army unit entered service in April 1979. More than 1,600 units have been made since production began, with the last units produced in Rock Island in 1992.
